April 30, 2012—Toshiba America Medical Systems, Inc. (Tustin, CA) announced that the US Food and Drug Administration has cleared the Aquilion Prime 80 series computed tomography (CT) system.
According to Toshiba, the system can generate 80 unique slices per rotation and is designed with in-field upgradeability to 160 slices. It produces high-quality clinical images and reduces radiation exposure with the company’s Adaptive Iterative Dose Reduction three dimension (AIDR 3D).
The company stated that AIDR 3D is an iterative process that helps to remove noise from the image with reduced radiation dose. Toshiba’s NEMA (National Electrical Manufacturers Association) XR 25 Dose Check software aims to enhance user awareness of the radiation dose being administered to patients. The Aquilion Prime has a 0.5-mm detector, a 7.5-MHU (megaheat unit) large-capacity tube, and 0.35-second scanning capacity. The high-speed rotation and fast reconstruction unit help provide faster, safer, and more accurate diagnoses. The system also features a 78-cm aperture gantry and a 660-pound patient-weight-capacity couch with a large gantry bore.
